If not using Org Viewer does the direct reports table build need to be used? i.e. can MSS simply refer to position management to determine direct reporting relationships i.e. like in 8.9? If so how is this done?  What MSS components use the Direct reports table build process and related tables ?

The below menu and component is dependent on the direct report build and this is used throughout MSS :

Will this work without the direct reports tables populated? Is it true that if we want the indirect reports to work in MSS then we need to use the direct reports table build. Please confirm? I thought that only the Org chart viewer functionality needed the Direct reports table build process to be run , for the chart to display correctly. Are the MSS components also affected by this process ? Does this process need to be run for the smooth functioning of the MSS components?
