E-QR: Running Query With Union From Query Manager Throws User Out Of Session With 'An error has occurred' Error Message (Doc ID 2014994.1)

Symptoms

When attempting to run a PS Query with UNION the from Query Manager the application server crashes with the following error:

“An error has occurred.
You may attempt to sign in again.
If you attempts fails, please contact your System Administrator.
Please make sure Webserver and Appserver are up. Null”

The same issue does not occur when running the affected query from Query Viewer.

Steps:

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Login to PIA;
2. Navigate to Reporting Tools > Query > Query Manager
3. Create a new PS Query with inconsistent fields in the UNION
4. View Query SQL:
SELECT A.OPRID, A.VERSION, A.OPRDEFNDESC, A.EMPLID
  FROM PSOPRDEFN A
UNION
SELECT B.OPRID, B.VERSION, B.OPRDEFNDESC, B.EMPLID, B.EMAILID
  FROM PSOPRDEFN B
5. Go ahead and Run the PS Query from Run tab
6. The application server crashes and the error occurs
