E-508: Related Content Menu Uses Invalid ARIA Menu Roles (Doc ID 2806229.1)

Last updated on SEPTEMBER 10, 2021

Applies to:

PeopleSoft Enterprise PT PeopleTools - Version 8.57 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The related content action menu (Related Actions button) uses ARIA menu roles, which are only intended for desktop-style app menus.

When a screen reader encounters elements marked up in this way it enters a special mode called "applications mode", which eliminates all of the native key commands provided by the browser.
Screen reader users only expect to encounter this mode on desktop applications, not websites, and will therefore not know what to do when all of the commands they are used to using no longer work.

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

Note: The issue can be observed in any application page/component that has a related content action field. The ELM application is referred below to describe the issue.

The issue can be seen in any Related Actions menu. For example:
1. Login to ELM using PS/PS with Screen Reader Mode Enabled.
2. Select the Current Enrollments tile.
3. Select any course that is listed in the Enrolled Classes grid as a link.
4. Select the green drop down arrow.
5. Right click the modal window and inspect the HTML.

Check in the Accessibility tab that one of the ARIA Attributes for the elements that compose that menu are role:menu and role:menuitem.
