E-IB : SFTPTARGETCONNECTOR throws Integration Gateway- Invalid Message Error - (158,10501)

Symptoms
Client created a node definition that uses SFTPTARGETCONNECTOR. The FTP utility is able to send file successfully to the FTP server, but when using SFTPTARGECONNECTOR to ping the node, the following exception is seen in the IB errorLog.html.
SFTPTargetConnector:InvalidMessageException. com.peoplesoft.pt.integrationgateway.common.ExternalSystemContactException: IntegrationServiceClient: sendRequestToServer(). Invalid UserID or Password.
Steps to replicate:
1. Log into PIA, navigate to PeopleTools > Integration Broker > Integration Setup > Nodes, and create a node that uses SFTPTARGECONNECTOR.
2. Ping the node, and observe the error above in the errorLog.html.
