Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When awarding a Pell Grant item type to a student, for their first term(s) in the Aid Year, after clicking the Validate button on Assign Awards to Students, the item type is assigned a 'Message' link that when clicked shows edit 9256:

The assigned item type amount itself is not adjusted unexpectedly, but the edit is not expected since the student is being awarded within the first 100% of their eligibility for the Aid Year. In one specific reported case, there were two Pell Item Types being assigned, and the edit was only assigned to the first of the Item Types and not the second; and if the order of the two item types was reversed, then the 9256 edit was no longer assigned, but the second item type then instead failed validation with a different edit, 9104.

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Navigate to Financial Aid > Awards > Award Processing > Assign Awards to a Student > Student Aid Package.
  2. Manually enter the Pell Item Type and associated data, then click 'Validate'.
  3. Note the pop up message and the 'Message' link showing for the item type after the pop-up is cleared.
  4. Click the link to verify the edit detail and code 9256.
