Purpose

This is a "living document" which is updated whenever new information is available.

A unique constraint error means that an attempt has been made to insert a record with a duplicate key structure of an existing record. This error can also be generated if an existing record is updated to generate a duplicate key.   

The error message and text can vary by Platform/RDBMS -- Here are some of the variations:

RDBMSMESSAGE # / IDMESSAGE TEXT
Oracle ORA-00001 "Unique Constraint Violated"
"Duplicate Key in Index"
SQL Server 805 / 000805 non-unique data
DB2 SQLCode -302 Insert/Update of unique constrained columns with duplicate data
Allbase 2509 Index uniqueness or unique/primary key constraint violated
RDB -803: %RDB-E-NO_DUP Index field value already exists; duplicates not allowed for Unique Index
