E-PORTAL: How can we have Different Portal Look and Feel for Different Users?

We would like our self-service users to have a different portal structure than our core users.  We have a custom homepage pagelet that provides links to all self-service functionality without the need for the left navigation menu.  While we can eliminate the menu from the homepage by using tabs, the menu pagelet shows up again after clicking a content reference.  We would also like the users to see the appropriate interface when they first sign in.
