Descending indexes were introduced to improve performance in cases where the result set needed to be sorted in descending order. This avoids an additional resort from ascending and was shown to be an effective method to decrease total execution times.
PeopleTools upgrades from pre-8.48 to 8.48 or later can trigger performance changes in queries using descending indexes.
