Remote Complex Object Instance Service: Setattribute Not Working With Child Product Attributes (Doc ID 1324715.1)

Symptoms

SetAttribute method from RCOIS in a workflow successfully updates attributes on the root product, but as soon as trying to set attributes on the child product, it fails with the following error:

CFG-00155: Complex Object Instance Service Internal Error:
SetAttribute failed.
Unable to retrieve the item with path %1
