Gateway Server Crashes and Hangs observed after a RAC node shutdown

Symptoms

 

The gateway service was connected to  a Oracle11g RAC database.

 

When shutting down the active RAC node where gateway was connected to, it has been observed that no automatic failover and reconnect  to a remaining RAC node took place.

 

Instead there have been crashes or process hangs with the call stack below:
