Query on pick applet causes hang

In a customer's environment, some client PCs shows the following issue:
1) Open any pick applet
2) In the pick applet, click 'Query' button to get into Query mode
3) Type comma ',' or inequality sign ('>' or '<') in any field and run the query
4) You will see error dialog and then the web client hangs up
