Using Safari 7 on iPhone with iOS 7.0.4 / 7.1 9.0 we cannot login to Siebel Sales Mobile (salesmobile_enu) - network error reported in Safari - how to work around this?

While we can access /salesmobile_enu successfully from other machines
using Safari 7 on an iPhone with IOS 7.0.x, 9.0
we cannot access the Siebel Sales Mobile application
For a subsecond the login screen is shown, then
"Safari cannot open this page because the network connection was interrupted"
