There is inconsistent UI behavior between home page search applets and regular form/list applets when the field is reconfigured to support case insensitive searches,
In the home page search applet all controls have prompt text "<Case Required>" even if one of the fields has been reconfigured to support case insensitive searches.
However when a regular applet placed into query mode the prompt "<Case Required>" is not displayed for the same field.
Expose a home page search applet and reconfigure one of the search fields to support case insensitive searches.
