Error While Starting BHD Service (Doc ID 2002174.1)

Last updated on SEPTEMBER 17, 2021

Applies to:

Siebel Email Marketing Server - Version 8.1.1.11 [IP2013] and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Customer installed Bounce handling daemon on AIX 6.1 server. Installation was successful and there were no errors in the log.

In the bhd.properties, we have entered the web service url, id and password.
Also SMTP port=25

Now on starting the bhd service we get the below error:
java.net.BindException: The file access permissions do not allow the specified action.
Error screen shot attached.

But when we change the SMTP port in bhd.properties to 2525, the bhd service starts correctly.

We think that this might be due to the reason that in unix systems, binding to a port less than 1024, usually is not allowed for non-root users.

So now we kept the SMTP port as 2525 but our network team told us that the MTA cannot relay bounce mail on port other than 25.
We changed the SMTP port in bhd.properties back to 25 but this time started the bhd service as root users (we installed the bhd daemon as 'siebel' user) and now the bhd service came up correctly.
