How to validate an empty field when Status field turns to a specific value?

For example for an Opportunity how to verify when creating a new Opportunity that a Contact is associated to it. So Contact should not be empty, it is a required information. But this should be trigger only for certain Opportunities Status. For some other Status the Contact is not required, so the validation for Contact is based on the Opportunity Status.
