Siebel barcode reader functionality questions

Question 1)
We are trying to have the facility for sales rep to scan two different UPC Numbers tied to two different BC Fields (UPC Number Entry and Customer UPC Code).
The scanning works but we have to toggle between the two fields (see attached) after every scan since it is reset to the default field (UPC Number Entry).
How do we control this in same applet when we know all the barcodes being scanned are tied to field , say Customer UPC Code ? Basically, if the user selects field Customer UPC Code in the dropdown, that should stay as is and not change back to UPC Number Entry on next item scan.

Question 2)

Alternatively,
- When the scanner scans a product, the data infills column 1 on an applet, for example: product number.

Some product do not have this number as it's not a required field.

- So the customer want to allow the barcode reader to use a second field based in to the applet, for example: 'product description'.
