Send Mail Error - Unrecognized Authentication Type

Symptoms
When trying to send an email using F9 functionality an error is occurring. The error observed in the log is this: "server unavailable: 504 5.7.4 Unrecognized authentication type"
The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1) Open Siebel app
2) Press on Site Map
3) Go to Administration - Communications:: Communications Drivers and Profiles
4) In Communications Drivers applet select Internet SMTP/POP3 Server driver
5) In Profiles applet add your Email Profile
6) Configure the email profile for outbound email with simple authentication by adding these 2 additional parameters:
- SMTP Account Name
- SMTP Account Password
7) From Profiles applet menu select Submit Profiles Changes
8) Test the new profile by sending an email with F9 functionality
9) Notice that the email is not sent and an error is thrown in the log.
