Why Does Custom Column Length Change Post Upgrade To IP2017 And Later?

Information in this document applies to any platform.
Customer upgraded to the latest Siebel version. Post upgrade on their Development environment, it was noticed that at the database level, the length of some of the columns were changed. This included custom as well as vanilla columns.
Can you help us understand why length of custom columns got increased post upgrade?
