An understanding of how Oracle Solaris Operating System and other related Oracle products use gratuitous Address Resolution Protocol(ARP), is necessary when dealing with ARP storms and other network-related problems.

This document discusses the ARP protocol in general, together with gratuitious ARP.

NOTE:  This document refers to commands/outputs from older versions of Solaris, older interfaces and provides snoop examples from IPv4 only.  Nevertheless, the document is still valid in terms of the basic working of Gratuitious ARP and we have retained this document as it may be useful for some customers.
