Howto get the NIS map for netid(4) automatically updated when updating the NIS maps for passwd(4) or group(4) (Doc ID 1002841.1)

Last updated on JUNE 08, 2021

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 9 to 11.2 [Release 9.0 to 11.0]
All Platforms

Among of other information the NIS map for netid(4) does contain the group membership assignments for all user entries. Some application programs do rely on the information from the NIS map netid i.e. when performing RPC-based communication with other systems. This means the information that is stored in the NIS map netid should always be kept up to date and needs to match to the corresponding entries that are stored in the NIS maps passwd(4) and group(4).

If using the make(1S) command to rebuild all NIS maps at once, then also the NIS map netid does get rebuilt and does get kept synchronized with the
contents in the passwd and group maps.

If using the make command to only rebuild either the NIS map passwd or the NIS map group, then the NIS map netid won't get rebuilt automatically. In consequence the information stored in the NIS map netid may no longer match to the corresponding information that is stored in the NIS maps passwd and group. This document provides an example configuration that will cause the NIS map netid to get rebuilt automatically, whenever you explicitly rebuild the NIS maps for passwd or group only.
