HSM (SAM-QFS): How to Turn File System Tracing (samtrace) On or Off (Doc ID 1003624.1)

Last updated on FEBRUARY 08, 2021

Applies to:

Oracle Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) and StorageTek QFS Software - Version 5.4 and later
All Platforms

All SAM-FS and QFS mounted file systems log their trace output in a trace buffer, when file system tracing is turned on. These traces are useful to troubleshoot and resolve file system related problems.  Typically Engineering needs to get involved, to parse through and understand the output.

Turning off SAM-FS file system tracing can improve performance of the mounted file systems.

Don't get confused between file system tracing and daemon tracing. SAM-FS daemon tracing can be turned on or off via changes applied to the defaults.conf file and is not discussed in this document.

For more details on how to engage maximum daemon tracing consult Document ID 1014005.1
For more details on
how to enable SAM-QFS daemon tracing  consult Document ID 1010462.1

The remainder of this document discusses methods of turning file system tracing on or off.
