sar Data Appears Corrupt or Returns Error "sar: malloc failed" (Doc ID 1008582.1)

Symptoms

When running sar to view performance data, the listing appears corrupt.  The command may also fail with an error message such as "sar:malloc failed - not enough space" or "sar:malloc failed - resource temporarily unavailable".  For example:

This problem is seen despite installing all available sar/sadc patches.
