Purpose

High system (kernel) time can effect the system performance negatively.

When the cpu starts spending the majority of its time in running kernel code, it triggers performance problems ranging from slow interactive response, database time-outs, cluster fail-over due to heart beat detection failure or slow network etc. A number of events mainly responsible for triggering high kernel overhead are discussed in this document.
