HSM: Archiving Metadata is Not Recommended
(Doc ID 1008977.1)
Last updated on OCTOBER 04, 2023
Applies to:
Oracle Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) and StorageTek QFS Software - Version 6.1 and laterAll Platforms
Goal
This document discusses the difference between file data, filesystem metadata and what should be archived.
Metadata information is only the directory structure information, symbolic link information, and segmented file index information.
The metadata is captured during samfsdump runs and includes that directory structure information, symbolic link information, segmented file index information, and the .inodes file. These components are all that is needed to recover from a complete file system crash or loss of an individual file.
Since samfsdump takes care of meta information, it becomes unnecessary to archive this information through the archiving process as well.
