Change in Solaris[TM] Linker Dependency Search Behaviour (Doc ID 1010895.1)

Last updated on JUNE 13, 2023

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 8.0 and later
All Platforms

Goal

Beginning with Solaris[TM] 9, the linker dependency search algorithm has been changed to search by file inode rather than simple file name. This change offers benefits such as the ability to link in different libraries with the same name, as well as a performance boost. However, if your environment depends on the old behaviour, you may see problems such as multiple incompatible versions of libraries being linked in from different directories. This document describes the change implemented in Solaris 9 and provides options for working around linking problems that may ensue due to dependence on the old behaviour.
