Solaris [TM] 10 Operating System (OS) - inetd, inetconv and nsswitch.conf interaction (Doc ID 1011053.1)

Symptoms

After performing all of the following:

  • adding new port number(s) and name(s) to /etc/services
  • adding new service(s) to /etc/inetd.conf
  • modifying the "services" entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf
  • running /usr/sbin/inetconv to convert the new services to SMF

You may receive messages like this:

Dec 15 15:37:35 s10host inetd[881]: Property 'name' of instance svc:/network/newservice/tcp:default is missing,
inconsistent or invalid
Dec 15 15:37:35 s10host inetd[881]: Property 'proto' of instance svc:/network/newservice/tcp:default is missing,
inconsistent or invalid
Dec 15 15:37:35 s10host inetd[881]: Invalid configuration for instance svc:/network/newservice/tcp:default,
placing in maintenance
