Error during bootup: "The IDPROM contents are invalid" (Doc ID 1011493.1)

Immediately after issuing a boot command, the following or similar message appears:

The IDPROM contents are invalid

The boot process may continue and produce additional messages similar to:

invalid format type in nvram
checksum error invalid format error in nvram
invalid format type

The output of banner at the ok prompt will also show the Ethernet address and Host ID as either all zeros or all fs, for example:

ok banner

OpenBoot 4.30.4, 0 MB memory installed, Serial #0.
