RPC services not registered if rpcbind restarted /etc/init.d/rpc

Symptoms
If, on Solaris 8 or Solaris 9, you use the script /etc/init.d/rpc to restart services, you can then 'break' rpcbind, and registered RPC services.
After the restart, previously registered RPC services - such as NFS, NIS, NIS+ (or others) are no longer registered with the RPC portmapper (rpcbind).
