The /var/adm/messages Files Do Not Rotate Properly

The /var/adm/messages files do not rotate properly.

The syslog facilities configured to send log data to /var/adm/messages in /etc/syslog.conf may mysteriously start logging to /var/adm/messages.0, messages.1, messages.2, messages.3, or not at all.

The following pfiles command shows that syslogd is writing to messages.0:
