Goal

A tape drive needs to be cleaned periodically to prevent damage to its read/write head and the tape cartridge loaded in the drive.  ACSLS has a feature that enables automatic cleaning of drives in serial-attached or network-attached libraries.  These libraries are also referred to as HLI-attached libraries. This document addresses that feature.

Note: Automatic cleaning operation in SCSI-attached libraries is handled by the LSM microcode and not by ACSLS.  This SCSI library feature can be enabled on the SCSI library's control panel.  Some client backup and archival applications have functions designed to  manage drive cleaning, as well.
