crontab -e yields "non-zero exit status from vi"
(Doc ID 1017682.1)
Last updated on JUNE 13, 2023
Applies to:
Solaris Operating System - Version 8 6/00 U1 and laterAll Platforms
Symptoms
Editing a crontab with vi sometimes returns the following error message on exit:
"non-zero exit status from vi"
The changes made during such sessions are discarded by cron. The cron process is very cautious about what it will accept from vi, and any event that provokes an exit status of 1 will nullify the entire crontab session.
