This document shall explain why the syslogd(1M) daemon process on syslog-servers may log messages that contain the IP-address/portnumber of syslog-clients, rather than the hostname(s) of the syslog client(s).

The file /var/adm/messages on a syslog server may contain log entries similar to this example:
