Understanding the Disk Label (VTOC)
(Doc ID 1017927.1)
Last updated on OCTOBER 05, 2022
Applies to:
Solaris Operating System - Version 8 and laterAll Platforms
Goal
This document provides a detailed description of what is stored in SPARC[R]/Solaris' disk label.
This is intended to help in understanding the consequences of commands, such as format --> label which rewrites the disk label.
Also, this document explains the meaning of warning messages, such as:
corrupt label - wrong magic number corrupt label - label checksum failed
To reinforce the fact that the disk label is written on-disk and does not change until being re-labeled, an example shows how to dissect the first sector taken directly from a disk and map it to the fields of Solaris disk label.
