Goal

From the T9840 Tape Drive User's Reference Manual P/N 95739, topic, "Tape Cartridges", the 9840 tape cartridge has a data capacity of 20 GB, native (uncompressed) when written by a T9840A or T9840B drive in low-density data format. The same cartridge, when written by a T9840C drive in PRML high-density data format, has a data capacity of 40 GB native (uncompressed).

Cartridges written in low-density data format via T9840A or T9840B transports can be read, but not appended by T9840C drives. An attempt to append a low-density data cartridge on a T9840C drive will fail with FSC 1717.
Cartridges written in PRML high-density data format cannot be read nor appended by T9840A or T9840B drives. An attempt to read data from a high-density data cartridge by T9840A or T9840B drives will fail with FSC 3629.
