Solaris[TM] SCSI and FC - Maximum Number of Targets, LUNs and Device Instances for Disk (Doc ID 1018739.1)

Last updated on MAY 02, 2024

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 8 6/00 U1 and later
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit)
Oracle Solaris on x86-64 (64-bit)
Oracle Solaris on x86 (32-bit)
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit)

Goal

Systems with a large number of attached SCSI disks usually require special configuration of the sd(7D) driver (by editing the sd.conf file to add additional SCSI targets and/or luns). In case of ssd(7D) (Sun Solaris[TM] FC disk driver), it would identify the disks connected to the FC HBA without any additional entries in the ssd.conf file. This article clarifies the limits imposed by the Solaris[TM] Operating Environment on the number of available minor numbers, sd/ssd instances, Targets and LUNs
