Purpose

This document is used to diagnose boot failures after Solaris patch installations. In rarely circumstances, after Solaris patch installations a system might fail to boot or hang during boot.

Symptoms and Error messages:

1. wrong kernel release is booted (lower than expected kernel - patch level)

2. system hang occurs during loading of a driver

3. system panic occurs during loading of a driver

4. symbols not found

5. non-global-zone might not booting

6. important SMF service might fail to start

Purpose/Scope:

The purpose of this document is to diagnose boot failures after Solaris patch installations. Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.
