Using Manual Transports as RTDs in a Mainframe Virtual Tape Environment

Goal
This article discusses using manual transports (non-library drives) as RTDs in a VTCS environment.
There are times, usually in a disaster recovery (DR) situation, where there is no Sun StorageTek automated library available and non-library drives must be used as RTDs. Without following the instructions in this document, non-library RTDs in VTCS 6.1 or higher would get messages such as the following:
SLS6898W RTD xxxx device type of 18TRACK not verified. LSM 00:00 is offline
SLS6619E RTD xxxx has an unrecognized device type of 18TRACK
And after those messages, the RTDs could not be used by VTCS for recalls or migrates.
