Goal
This document will explain how to create a printer in Oracle Solaris for which the device (-v option to lpadmin) is a file in /var/tmp file system, and not a physically attached or network attached printer.
Such a printer is useful for testing and troubleshooting printing issue such as, but not limited to
- Incorrect printed output
- Banner page problems
- print job creation issues
where either another printer is not available or one or several printers are needed with various configurations (-I, -T options to lpadmin, for example).
