Attempts by a single user to launch a second application instance of a common window manager object (usually a full desktop) may result in an error from the window manager and a failed launch.  It will not matter from which application server the first or the second launch attempt originates.

A demonstration of this behavior with Gnome Desktop, results in the following message:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1

Gnome will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Note: Running in a NIS or NIS+ environment may make this behavior more likely.
