Automount fails with "pingnfs: <NFS server name>: RPC: Timed out" (Doc ID 1332029.1)

Symptoms

Periodically, usually under increased workload on an NFS server or client, an automounted directory/filesystem might fail to mount, and a message in the form:

   pingnfs: <NFS server name>: RPC: Timed out

is logged from the automountd daemon.  

Solaris versions earlier than Solaris 10 might report "NFS server not responding" rather than the pingnfs message above.
