Oracle HSM (SAM-QFS): How to Online Grow a Filesystem (Doc ID 1339502.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 13, 2023

Applies to:

Oracle Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) and StorageTek QFS Software - Version 5.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

As filesystems fill, it may become necessary to add meta devices or data devices to your QFS or SAM file system.

The existing filesystem elements cannot change size after a 'samfs' type filesystem is built.  The details of all the filesystem elements, including their capacity, are stored in the superblocks of each filesystem element and cannot be changed.  The only way to increase the size of a 'samfs' type filesystem is to add devices.

This document will discuss how to add a device/lun with an 'online' grow of the filesystem.

HSM Engineering strongly recommends upgrading to the official 6.1-04 patch release or later, prior to attempting an online grow of a filesystem.  This is because of a bitmap issue found, when growing a large filesystem without adding a metadata device, that could potentially cause data loss.  This was filed as bug 29455600.  Reference Document 2525959.1 for more information on this issue.
