Apache Web Server Fails To Start With The Message "Unable to open logs" (Doc ID 1384225.1)

Symptoms

Apache 2 fails to start on Solaris 10 with the following error message:

[Mon Nov 14 12:24:59 2011] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
(20)Not a directory: httpd: could not open error log file /var/www/xyz.com/error/error.log.
Unable to open logs
(20)Not a directory: httpd: could not open error log file /var/www/xyz.com/error/error.log.
Unable to open logs
(20)Not a directory: httpd: could not open error log file /var/www/xyz.com/error/error.log.
