Symptoms

In some cases it has been observed that a disk drive replacement of a faulty drive has caused following message upon insertion of a replacement disk drive on their NAS:

The disk 'serial number  HDD xx ' uses an interface (SAS) that is incompatible with the enclosure. Major Defect

The new disk that has been insert remains unavailable and there has been no re-silvering activity at all.

The drive remains faulted state and the pool Degraded

This can happen with older code but this document covers the latest 2010 Q3.4.2 code with 3R53 SIM firmware and applies to the SAS-1 versions of the product 7410 and 7310

Changes

The Drive reports as a SAS device instead of a SATA device when the software tries to add the drive
