Why Is /var/spool/clientmqueue Filled With Many Files ? (Doc ID 1508089.1)

Symptoms

An increase of the number of files in /var/spool/clientmqueue is seen together with the following logged events in /var/log/syslog:

Oct 19 09:43:09 <HOSTNAME> sendmail[1299]: [ID 702911 mail.info] grew WorkList for /var/spool/clientmqueue to 2000
Oct 19 09:43:10 
<HOSTNAME> sendmail[1299]: [ID 702911 mail.info] grew WorkList for /var/spool/clientmqueue to 3000
Oct 19 09:43:11 
<HOSTNAME> sendmail[1299]: [ID 702911 mail.info] grew WorkList for /var/spool/clientmqueue to 4000
Oct 19 09:43:11 
<HOSTNAME> sendmail[1299]: [ID 702911 mail.info] grew WorkList for /var/spool/clientmqueue to 5000
...
and eventually:

Oct 19 09:43:14 <HOSTNAME> sendmail[1299]: [ID 702911 mail.info] FAILED to grow WorkList for /var/spool/clientmqueue to #####
