Solaris Operating System - Version 11 11/11 to 11.3 [Release 11.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Why does Solaris 11 show ifSpeed as 0 when the cable is unplugged while Solaris 10 does not?

On Solaris 11, we can see the ifSpeed for an unplugged network port is 0.

# uname -a
SunOS ss11a 5.11 11.0 sun4v sparc SUNW,T5240

# snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost ifSpeed
IF-MIB::ifSpeed.1 = Gauge32: 127000000
IF-MIB::ifSpeed.2 = Gauge32: 0

On the other hand,  in Solaris 10 the ifSpeed for an unplugged network port is not 0.

# uname -a
SunOS ss10c 5.10 Generic_147440-01 sun4v sparc SUNW,T5240

# /usr/sfw/bin/snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost ifSpeed
IF-MIB::ifSpeed.1 = Gauge32: 127000000
IF-MIB::ifSpeed.2 = Gauge32: 100000000
