Missing write permission for /var/tmp prevents the users from accessing from remote Xserver via XDMCP on Solaris 11 (Doc ID 1530500.1)

Last updated on JUNE 13, 2023

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 11 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

If the write permission for group/other for /var/tmp were missing, the users couldn't login via XDMCP from
remote Xserver(e.g. Xephyr, Xnest, Xming or that kind of PC Xserver software.)

When accessing the system via XDMCP, you will get the following dialog on gray background.

There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/usr/lib/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256.)

Then the Xsession will be terminated and you won'be be able to get GDM login screen on your Xserver.

Also one will see some error messages in /var/adm/messages like below.
