How to determine the Subsystem Device ID for a Fibre Channel HBA when the Operating System is VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x or ESXi 5.x (Doc ID 1542334.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 04, 2022

Applies to:

Emulex FC HBA - Version Not Applicable to Not Applicable [Release N/A]
Qlogic FC HBA - Version Not Applicable to Not Applicable [Release N/A]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

In order to establish whether a Fibre Channel HBA card is Oracle branded, as opposed to a Native QLogic or Native Emulex HBA, it is often necessary to identify the SubSystem Device ID (SSID) of that card.

Oracle branded HBAs will have a unique SSID which differ to their Native Vendor (QLogic or Emulex) SSID counterparts.

This Document will detail how to determine the SSID of a FC HBA when the Operating System is VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x or ESXi 5.x.

If a VMware log bundle (as detailed in Doc ID 1526479.1 - How to Collect Diagnostic Data From VMware ESX/ESXi and VirtualCenter Server) is available then refer to Method 3.

If the Operating System is Solaris, please refer to Doc ID 1282491.1
