SL3000/ LTO - Drive Trays "Moving' Within the Drive Bays, Gone Offline and Failed to Host / SLC Multiple Times (Doc ID 1553660.1)

Last updated on APRIL 07, 2025

Applies to:

LTO Tape Drive - Version All Versions and later
Sun StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.
SL3000, config is AEM | CEM | BASE | CEM | AEM.
The current issue is that the drive 1,1,3,1,1 Bay 2 has gone 'offline' and failed to host and SLConsole multiple times in the last 2 months.
All 3 times the tray 'appeared' to be powered on but tape had not rewound and was not ejected.
Tape drive ( HP LTO4 ) was replaced on suspicion last time. Manually ejected the tape and the returned the drive to service.
Customer will monitor and next plan is to swap 2 drive trays to see if the fault follows the tray or stays with the drive bay.
One thing noticed was that all of the drive trays despite being "latched" correctly, were all 3 to 5 mm out of position, ie all drive trays could be pushed further into the housing.
Is this expected that over time the trays can 'creep' outwards ?
