The "date" Command on Solaris Guests Sometimes Returns Incorrect Value, “WED DEC 31 1969” on VirtualBox Version 4.2 (Doc ID 1559602.1)

Last updated on FEBRUARY 27, 2015

Applies to:

Oracle VM VirtualBox - Version 4.2 to 4.2 [Release 4.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2 deployments that host a virtualized Solaris guest operating system may see incorrect values, such as "Dec 31st 1969" or "Thu Jan  1 1970" reported by the 'date' command, instead of the correct time and date.

Example:

# date
Wed Dec 31 19:00:00 EST 1969

Note: This issue is not seen on other guest operating systems, only Solaris.  In addition, the behavior may not be presented consistently: sometimes the date is correct and other times it is not. The first level of troubleshooting is to verify  Time Synchronization has been configured correctly, as oultined in the product documentation at: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#changetimesync
