"Number Of Virtual Devices Exceeds The Maximum For A Given Controller" Error Message seen When Attempting to Start Virtual Machine within Virtual Desktop Infrastructure after Upgrade of VMWare's Vcenter (Doc ID 1570330.1)

Symptoms

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Administrators attempting to start a virtual machine provisioned by VMWare's VCenter that has been customized with more than 4 VLANs enabled may receive the following message on the Vcenter console:

Number of virtual devices exceeds the maximum for a given controller

This condition will prevent the virtual machine from starting successfully.    While in this state, users who login to VDI with will find that their list of available Desktops has been amended with a red exclamation mark, indicating that the VM with more than 4 VLANs enabled is not available.

Changes

The Vcenter software has recently been upgraded from version 4 to version 5.
